There are many conditions that can be treated with Hypnotherapy. The list below is not exhaustive, but it will give you a good idea of what types of conditions can be treated, a brief explanation of the treatment and an approximate idea of how many treatments it could take to achieve a satisfactory result. If you have any questions about a specific treatment, see the Frequently Asked Questions or Contact Margaret.
Anxiety
Anxiety is one of the most treatable psychiatric conditions treated with hypnotherapy. Most clients respond in two sessions. All clients receive reinforcement tapes which they can use to reduce anxiety. The first treatment is an ego strengthening session. In this session, the skill of hypnotizing oneself is learned. Also clients are given suggestions to improve self-efficacy and instill hope that they will get well. Concentration and memory are improved.
Tapes are listened to once a day. Tapes are usually 20 to 35 minutes.
In the second session, the skill of thought blocking and changing thoughts to more rational ones is taught in the second hypnotic tape.
In hypnosis, will-power is not used. Rather imagination and visualization are used. Because your subconscious mind is tapped, more is possible.
Anger Management
For anger management, the treatment is similar to that of anxiety. However, some cognitive therapy sessions are needed. Clients who are motivated usually respond well in six sessions, which are a combination of cognitive therapy and hypnotherapy. The cognitive therapy, which I use, is rational emotive therapy. This therapy helps people to change their thinking on a conscious level.
In the treatment for anger management, both treatments that work on the conscious and subconscious mind are employed.
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
Four hypnotherapy sessions are employed to help clients to
- build self-esteem Self-efficacy is also improved.
Improvement of Skills
One hypnotherapy session is employed to help clients to visualize success and develop belief and confidence.
Developing Assertiveness Skills
Treatments are hypnotherapy similar to the one outlined in sports and music enhancement of skills.
Phobias
Many clients respond well in one session. There are only two inborn fears. These are the fear of falling and the fear of loud noises. Many of the other fears are learned and usually respond well to one hypnotherapy session.
Smoking Cessation
Clients respond well in one session if they have tried to quit and have had long periods of success before relapsing again. For people who have not had these periods of success, four sessions once every two weeks are helpful. Some cognitive therapy handouts are given as well.
Drug Addiction
Gambling and sex addictions respond well to four sessions as well. Some cognitive therapy is given to help clients to change self-talk on a conscious level.
Sexual Enrichment Therapy
This is done using imagery and suggestions to increase self-esteem and self efficacy. Circulation issues are also addressed using hypnotherapy.
Other Medical Conditions
In most cases 1 to four sessions are needed for the following:
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Many people find themselves improving greatly with one session with reinforcement tapes.
The following can sometimes be treated in one session:
- Finding lost objects
The following have been helped with one to two sessions.
- Sleepwalking
All of the following respond well to hypnosis.
- Preparing for childbirth
Regression
Enhancing spiritual development, past life regression and present life regression are also done. With past life regression, symptoms need to be present necessitating the regression. Premature invoking of these memories can sometimes be harmful for clients.
Regression for present life traumas is very effective. In these cases, it depends on how much trauma needs to be explored to determine the number of sessions. Hair pulling, nail biting, and other habits such as procrastination can all be treated in relatively short numbers of sessions. In most cases one session with daily reinforcement tapes is needed. With the exception of present life regression therapy, reinforcement tapes are given and clients are encouraged to listen to them.
